Job Safety Analysis (JSA)
A Job Safety Analysis (JSA) is a step-by-step review of a task that identifies the hazards involved and the controls needed to carry it out safely. Every contractor working at a Timewise site is expected to complete a JSA before starting work, and to review it with their crew at the job.
Why we use JSAs
Most incidents happen during routine tasks where a hazard was overlooked or a control was missed. Working through a JSA before the job starts gives the crew a shared understanding of what could go wrong and how each risk will be managed — before anyone is exposed to it.
How to complete a JSA
- Break the job into steps. List the task in the order it will be performed, one step at a time.
- Identify the hazards in each step. Consider people, equipment, the environment, energy sources, and anyone working nearby.
- Define the controls. For each hazard, state how it will be eliminated or controlled — and confirm the control is in place before the step begins.
- Review it with the crew. Everyone doing the work signs on to the JSA and understands their part in it.
- Stop and revise if conditions change. A JSA is a live document. If the scope, the site, or the conditions change, update it before continuing.
Before you start work
- The JSA is completed and signed by everyone performing the task.
- Required permits are in place (see Forms and Work Order).
- The Golden Rules and Lifesaving Rules that apply to the task have been reviewed.
- Everyone understands their authority to stop the job if a control is missing.
